Welcome to the Posh Faces Blog. Imani A here. As a leading skin care specialist, esthetician, and makeup artist in New York, I am often asked by my clients, both men and women alike, how can they achieve flawless skin. Now, in the right hands, a set of application brushes can seem like a magic wand and if all else fails there is the wonder of cell phone filters, editing software and photoshop. But the truth is the best first steps toward complexion perfection starts with your daily skin care routine. The beauty really does come from within. A healthy body radiates and glows. Over the next few months, I will be highlighting ways to care for your skin.

First things first, let’s talk about summer and the need to claim your bronze beauty status and be beach ready. Tanning maybe pleasing to the eye when your young, but as you age, tanning or worse burning of the skin, can lead to long term skin damage and cancer risks. Now there is a common misconception that particular races do not tan nor need to go the extra mile to ensure sun safety. However, everyone tans and everyone can suffer from UV damage. What is the best line of defense? Sunscreen! Sunscreen itself has grown and now offers formulas for most skin types.... chemical free for sensitive skin, extra emollient for dry skin, or a formula that is oil free. So whether your a Pale Princess or a Beautiful, Black goddess, protect your health and your skin.

UV light brands your skin with photo-aging. Photo-aging can occur in the form of brown spots, coarse skin and wrinkles. Believe it or not, tanning is a form of skin damage and you do not have to be burned to experience the lasting effects of photo-aging. Sunlight trips the skin of it’s barrier lipids, resulting in inflammation, production of reactive oxygen molecules that alter healthy cell growth, and the increase of collagen destructing enzymes.I can not stress enough the importance of properly applying the appropriate strength and amount of sunscreen to your skin. You must also apply it frequently; It is recommended to reapply every two hours. A minor inconvenience for long term protection and the benefits of wearing sunscreen long term are exponential. Furthermore, sunscreen can also prevent an unwanted pigmentation we may already have from getting darker from the sun. However, the big picture here is not how you look in that picture, but how long you live to take them. The priority is keeping you cancer free. It just takes one blistering sunburn to doubles your risk of melanoma. Worried? If you feel like your exposure is questionable, go wild with age-fighting ingredients to help reverse damage and protect skin from any future effects of UV. Get yearly check ups and make sure to be skin care aware by noting any color changes on the skin or skin marking such as moles.

Do you still crave that sun kissed glow? Go for it, but go about it safely. There are a variety of sunless tanners on the market. They are safe for skin and you can determine whether your glow can be applied gradually or all at once. There are also a large number of businesses offering spray tanning services and results are immediate. Spray tans have come along way from the orange tone they once were. You can be radiant and still be safe. Protecting your skin today will help you age gracefully and beautifully.
